An Army veteran, John served in the Pacific during World War II. He served as an assistant to a chaplain for four years.
He fought in the battle of Makin and earned the Bronze Star for his role in the battle of Saipan.
He was a 1937 graduate of Butler High School, completed studies at Geneva College and did post-graduate work at the University of Pittsburgh and George Williams College in Chicago.
He worked for the YMCA for the majority of his life.
He started out as youth director in Sewickley and then held that position at the Butler YMCA. He served as executive director of the Butler YMCA from 1954 to 1969.
In 1969, he moved to Philadelphia, where he served as the executive director of the Reed House YMCA until 1973, when he became executive director at the Chemung County YMCA in Elmira, N.Y. He retired from that position in 1977.
He and his wife, Helen, went on to serve as house managers for the Chemung County Association for Retarded Citizens, overseeing the care of residents.
In 1985, the couple retired from that position and returned to Butler the following year.
He was a member of St. Andrew's United Presbyterian Church in Butler, where he was an elder.
He was an accomplished piano player, serving as pianist of the Butler Kiwanis Club, where he also was secretary and past president. He was past president of the state YMCA Senior Citizen Clubs; past president of the Meridian Senior Citizens; executive director for 15 years of the YMCA Industrial Management Club; executive director for 15 years of the Butler Area Council of Churches; past president of the Harbison Chapter of Retired YMCA Directors; the Butler Gideons and the Meridian Veterans Club.
He was also founder, past president and pianist of the Butler County Family YMCA MORA Club.
He was a choir member of churches in the Meridian section of Butler; Somerdale, N.J.; Horseheads, N.Y.; and St. Andrews in Butler. He earned the Good Samaritan Award from the YMCA in 2002 with his wife.
In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening, table tennis, golf, traveling and his lifetime health club membership at the Butler County Family YMCA.
In addition to his wife, Helen, and son, John; he is survived by three daughters, Margaret Ann; Rebecca; and Mary Lou; his sister, Mary Margaret; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a step-great-grandchild; and nieces and nephews.
