PASSING OF GEORGE S. MAHLIN
Who Was an Early Settler Butler County
At 12:30 o'clock Monday morning, October 16, George S. Mahlin, of David City, departed this life at his home. He had been suffering with complication of diseases about eight months, but was bedfast but a few days prior to his death. Arterio-schlerosis, or hardening of the arteries, was the cause of his death.

Mr. Mahlin was 63 years of age on September 26, 1916. He was born on a farm near McAlisterville, Pa., son of Washington and Mary Mahlin. After he had reached the age of 2_ years he left Pennsylvania and went to Illinois, locating in Bureau county. In February, 1885, he came to Nebraska and for a couple of years lived on farms near Rising City. He then purchased land ten miles west of David City and moved to that place. After 25 years he decided to retire from farm life and purchased a home in North David City, moving here in January, 1910.

On May 4, 1880, Mr. Mahlin and Sadie Elizabeth Garman were united in marriage in Walnut, Ill. She and four sons survive Mr. Mahlin. Two sons, Harvey G. and Edgar F., live near David City, Jay C. Mahlin lives in Smithfield and Eugene L. Mahlin is employed in Fremont. The entire family were with Mr. Mahlin during the last days of his illness.

He also leaves three brothers and one sister, Henry and Corbet Mahlin, living in Illinois, Alfred Mahlin, residing in Colorado, and Mrs. Anna Chandler, a resident of Oklahoma.

For 23 years Mr. Mahlin had been a faithful and conscientious member of the Christian church. He was affiliated with the A.O.U.W. lodge, carrying $2000 insurance in that order.

Funeral services were held in the Christian church in David City on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. E. C. Davis, formerly pastor of the church, came from Lincoln and had charge of the services. The singing was by a quartet, Misses Anna Eller and Alma Taylor and Messrs. Hugo Hahn and Guy Walling. Burial was in the David City cemetery. Roy Becker, E. K. Crow, C. H. Harris, Peter Mysenburg, William Taylor and John Zeilinger acted as pallbearers.

Those coming from away to attend the funeral of Mr. Mahlin were Mr. and Mrs. D. Y. Branthoffer and Mr. and Mrs. John Kilgore, of Kearney. Mrs. J. C. Mahlin, of Smithfield, who was here prior to Mr. Mahlin's death, remained with her husband for the funeral, as did also Eugene Mahlin of Fremont. Many old-time neighbors and friends were here from Rising City.
