On October 21st, 1942, a B-17 carrying World War I ace Eddie Rickenbacker and seven others on a secret mission for the War Department ditched in the South Pacific. DeAngelis (the plane's navigator), Rickenbacker, and five others were eventually rescued after spending three weeks adrift in three life rafts. The eighth passenger died of exposure and was buried at sea.

John Jean DeAngelis--
John Jean DeAngelis, 83, of Harrisburg, died Tuesday, February 4, at his home.

He was a retired administrator from the State Department of Labor & Industry and a World War II Veteran.

He was the widower of Mary Y. DeAngelis and was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Jeanne DeAngelis. He is survived by his daughter, Deirdre DeAngelis; and one grandson, Samuel Maurer, both of Harrisburg.

Services were held in Resurrection Cemetery.

Arrangements were handled by the Neill Funeral Home, Paxtang.
