Ben was born a slave. He worked for the Rev. William Ferry (founder of Grand Haven) after arriving in Grand Haven. Ben enlisted in the 102nd U.S. Colored Infantry, but wound up in Company B. Discharged in 1865 in Charleston. He was listed as a domestic servant to Mary White, and later a farmer. He was the 1st black man to enter the Ottawa County Poor Farm, where he died of old age.
