Private WILLIAM BUSSELL, Co. E, 86th Illinois Volunteer Infantry

William Bussell was born c. 1837 in England. He is almost certainly related to and may be the son of either Samuel Bussell, who was born on February 1, 1818 in England, or James Bussell, who was born January 9, 1820 in Somersetshire, England. The following biogarphy about James Bussell is found in "Record of Olden Times or 50 years on the Prairie, 1880, Page 752 Steuben Township, Marshall County, Illinois." "James Bussell
Mr. Bussell was born in Somersetshire, England, in 1820, and came to the United States in 1844. He first settled in Ohio, then removed to Peoria county, and came to Marshall County in 1851. He married Miss Johannah Howard in 1862. She was born in Ireland, and is a member of the Catholic Church. He owns 560 acres all in cultivation, except 80 which is timber. He is one of the solid old farmers of La Prairie Township, influenced only by that which he believes to be right. He is a good neighbor and kind friend." Samuel Bussell also came to Marshall County, Illinois about the same time. Samuel Bussell died in Marshall County, Illinois in 1894, while James Bussell died in Marshall County, Illinois in 1903.

1. Mary Jane Bussell, born July __, 1861 in Illinois, almost certainly Marshall County. Mary's father died during the Civil War in 1863, when Mary was not quite 2 years of age. Her mother then was married 2nd to ____________ McCue.
Mary was married to Roscoe L. Bonham on July 2, 1883 in Vermillion County, Indiana. Roscoe was born on August __, 1858 in Illinois. At the time of the 1900 census, Mary, Roscoe and their children are found in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota, where Roscoe is a Clerk on the Railroad.
Mary and Roscoe were the parents of at least six children;

Eleanor was a well known Teacher, Historian and founder of the Marshall County Historical Society, who was a GREAT help to me in my search for information about the boys of Marshall County, who served in the 86th Illinois.)
