Mrs. Helen Stevenson Mahon, 86, widow of former U.S. Congressman George Mahon, died Thursday, Dec. 10, at her home in Colorado City.
Funeral services were Saturday at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Mark Rickman and Rev. Julius Early, pastor, officiating.
Burial was in Loraine Cemetery under the direction of Kiker-Seale, Funeral Home.
Born Dec. 15, 1900, in Floresville, she married George Herman Mahon, her high school sweetheart, on Dec. 21, 1923 in Fort Worth. He preceded her in death Nov. 19, 1985. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Mahon graduated from Loraine High School and received a degree from San Marcos State Teacher's College.
Mrs. Mahon was often referred to as the "First Lady" of the South Plains. The Mahons lived for many years in the Washington, D C area where Mr. Mahon became one of the most powerful and most influential members to ever serve in the U.S. House of Representatives. First elected to the House in 1934, he served 44 years in Congress, retiring in 1978 as dean of the law makers.
The George and Helen Mahon Library in Lubbock was named in honor of the couple in 1974. A scholarship at Western Texas College in Snyder is also named in honor of the couple.
Survivors include a daughter, Daphne Mahon Holt of Dallas; and three grandchildren, George M . Holt of Durham, N .C., Betsy Davis and Laural Ann Luper, both of Dallas.
