Came to the United States with his parents, Thomas R. and Mary Williams, as a young boy. Like his father, he worked most of his life in the coal mines of Mauch Chunk in Carbon County.

He was in Battery D 5th US Artillery from 1864-1867 enlisting the same day and discharging the same day as another Wesh young man at the same age William Warlow. Williams appears to have been born in Merthyrdvyll, Wales. Enlistment source: National Archives.
