Mary Elizabeth Porter Mays Griffin was born in South Carolina, the daughter of John Porter, a Methodist Minister and Elizabeth D, Wingfield. She married Meade Mays in 1844. Her father died in 1847. Two children were born of the first marriage before husband Meade Mays died January 12, 1849 in his 31st year of fever. She subsequently married William Moutlrie Griffin in 1851. In 1866, after the Civil War, she, her husband and children moved from South Carolina to the Louisiana/ Texas area. They lived in Bossier Parish Louisiana briefly until 1870, then moved to Panola County Texas where they settled and made their home. In addition to the two children by Meade Mays, she gave birth to five children by Moultrie Griffin. Three of her second family children were alive in 1900 in addition to her two children from her first marriage. By 1885 her second husband, Moultrie Griffin, a merchant in the Panola County, Texas area had died at a relative young age and she lived with one of her various children the reminder of her life. Many of her children became successful businessmen in Texas and Louisiana. She died at the home of her son, Larkin Griffin, a bank president in Kilgore, Gregg County, Texas in 1906 and is buried at the Methodist burying ground at the Mt. Zion Cemetery near Deberry in Panola County, Texas with her second husband.
