Anna Lucretia Mays was born near Cokesbury, Abbeville, South Carolina, the daughter of Meade [Medy} Mays and Mary Elizabeth Porter of South Carolina. Her father died in 1849 of fever in his 31st year when she was about two years old. Her mother, Mary Elizabeth Porter Mays subsequently married William Moultrie Griffin in Abbeville County, South Carolina in 1851. In 1866, after the Civil War ended, when she was about 19 years old the family moved to the Louisiana- Texas area where her stepfather became involved in the mercantile business. At the age of 20 in 1867, she married James Madison Trosper who had been born in Kentucky. Her husband was a farmer, businessman and became quite successful and well to do in many enterprises. She and her family lived in Panola County near Bethany, Louisiana for many years. They may have also owned holdings in Harrison County, Texas. She gave birth to three children that survived her. She died near Bethany, Louisiana in Texas in 1910 and is buried in the old Methodist burying grounds near the Mt. Zion Methodist Church in Panola County near Deberry, Texas.
