Alice Starnes was born in Laurens County, South Carolina the daughter of of Robert C Starnes, and Mary Elizabeth Waldrop. Her father entered the Confederate Army in 1862 and served in the 3rd South Carolina Infantry Battalion and was killed in action at the battle of Ream's Station in Virginia in 1964 when Alice was about 16 years of age. His death left a widow and several minor children without a father and provider. In 1865 at the age of 17 years, she married John Matthew Mays in South Carolina and moved with her husband and his family to Texas in 1866. She gave birth to two children, Carrie Mays born in 1866 and Robert Meade Mays born in 1870. Alice and her daughter, Carrie became ill during an Yellow Fever epidemic that hit Texas and died in December 1871. Alice was 23 years old at death. Robert and her husband survived the epidemic. She and her daughter are buried at Mt Zion Cemetery near Deberry in Panola County, Texas. The original stone marker placed on their graves at the time of death, deteriorated over the years, and was replaced in the 1930/40s by a new large monument likely by her surviving son, Robert Meade Mays who became a successful businessman in the Shreveport Louisiana area.
