Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, and 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, all at Boelter Funeral Home, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Norlin Oscar Backman was born Jan. 2, 1928, on the family's farm near Wilton. He was the son of Lawrence and Anna (Hryckow) Backman. He attended Grass Lake Country School and later received his GED certificate in 1955. He married Margaret Baranyk on Nov. 30, 1947 in Wilton, where they lived until moving to Bismarck in 1953.
During his career he drove a cattle truck, was custodian and bus driver at Montefiore School in Wilton. Later, he was employed at the Garrison Dam during its construction and also worked with the erection of the transmission towers associated with the dam. He was a partner and operator of the Standard Service Station in Wilton. He worked on the construction of the Amoco Refinery in Mandan. In 1955, he began working for the Amoco Oil Company at the Mandan refinery until retiring in 1988 after 33 years of service. During his tenure at the Amoco Refinery, he served as a union representative prior to becoming a supervisor. Norlin also owned and managed Backman Excavating with his sons for 10 years.
Norlin was active in local parties and once ran for a state office. For relaxation, he loved camping, boating, fishing and traveling with his wife and family. He owned his own airplane and enjoyed flying for pleasure. Norlin and Margaret spent several winters camping in Arizona. During the summer, they traveled around the state with the Family Motor Coach and the Good Sam clubs. Norlin was a past president of the local Good Sam chapter.
Norlin was a charter member of the Mission Evangelical Free Church in Wilton and an active member of the First Evangelical Free Church of Bismarck for 45 years. Norlin was a member of the Gideons for 14 years and was president of the local organization for several years. He traveled to many churches in North Dakota presenting the work of the Gideon ministry.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; three sons and their families, Doug and Shirley, Moorhead, Minn., Craig and Becky, Hazen, and Curt and Jean, Seattle, Wash.; a daughter, Wendy, Bismarck; eight grandchildren, Laurie and Gregg Thielman, Fargo, Lamar, Seabeck, Wash., Lawrence and Bekah, Fargo, Lynnae, Moorhead, Minn., Scott, Jenny and Dustin, Hazen, and Wendy Lounsbury, Seattle, Wash.; one great-grandson, Charles Parker Thielman; his mother, Anna Backman, Bismarck; three brothers and their families, Melvin and Annette, Wilton, Arvid and Helen, Wilton, and Sid and Marlene, Bismarck; two sisters and their families, Rosemary Johnson, Wilton, and Beverly and Earl Estes, Bismarck; and many nieces and nephews.
Norlin was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Backman; and two sisters, Genevieve and Alvina. (Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck)
