Bethlehem Cumberland Presbyterian Church:

The pulpit shown in the photo above was built by the Reverend Thomas Mead Hendrix, a master carpenter and Cumberland Presbyterian minister for over 74 years. Its whereabouts today is unknown. The Columbia Cumberland Presbyterian Presbytery took ownership of the church once the church affiliation was discontinued in August 1983 and made the final disposition of the fixtures.

Reverend Thomas Mead (Papa to his family) Hendrix was a native of Rutherford County, an active ordained minister in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church for over 74 years, and a Mason. He moved to the Hardison Mill Community in 1900 from Rutherford County, later living in the Berlin area and late in life lived in the Bethlehem Community with his son Bascom. He was living with his daughter Fannie Belle Hendrix Cheek at the time of his death. He was a master carpenter and helped build the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Rockvale. He was the first pastor of the Jackson Ridge Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He served various churches in Rutherford, Bedford, Lincoln, and Marshall counties including the Bethlehem Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He occupied the post of Moderator of the Elk Presbytery for a longer period than any other minister. He lived to the age of 97 and his life spanned 21 United States presidents.

Reverend Hendrix and wife Sarah Catherine Tribble Hendrix are buried in the formerly church owned Bethlehem Cemetery less than a mile from the church and adjacent to his son's former farm.

When the present building was erected the north pillars of the old church were used in the foundation. The south pillars sit some 5 feet to the side because the new church is smaller than the one which burned. The lumber used to build the present church building was purchased from a sawmill operated by 'Doc' Morris at Hardison's Mill. The sawing of the lumber was performed by 'Big' Jim Davis.

Services were held in the yard under the trees, until completion of the building. The present church building was completed in 1917 and renovated in the mid 1950s, with services being held in member's homes until completion of the renovation. The renovation was performed by members Eugene Sharp, Wilburn Thomas Tindell, Jr.., Paul Shires, L. R. Cheatham and others and consisted mainly of re-engineering the original 'self supporting' roofing system that had failed shortly after being built and required the installation of steel rods spanning the building. At this time Sunday School rooms were also added.

Great-grandson's Memories of this Church:
One of the very earliest memory I have of this church is that of my Great Grandfather, Rev. Thomas Mead (Papa) Hendrix, who was a minister for 74 years and a minister at this church before I was born, standing before the pot bellied stove, in his long frock coat and long gray beard, teaching Sunday School one Sunday morning. I was probably 4 or 5 years of age at the time. When I would visit him with my mother, his Grand Daughter, or my father it was at his son's home just across the field from the church and across the road from our farm. He would be sitting in the corner of the living room next to the fireplace and for a 3 or 4 year old this 90+ year old man was very scary with his long beard and wearing his famous long black frock coat, which he wore year around.

My family has strong ties to this area and this church building. In addition to my family owning the land surrounding the church since 1887 and my Great Grandfather being a minister here, this was the church of my Great Grand Parents Vannie and Tom Tindell, the church of my Grand Parents Wilburn Thomas, Sr. and Annie Mai Hendrix Tindell. I had great uncles who served here as Elders and Sunday School teachers, great aunts who served as pianists, organists, and Sunday School teachers. I had cousins, a sister, a wife, and a daughter who attended this church. My uncle Wilburn Thomas (Jake) Tindell, Jr. served as a Deacon here. My father was an Elder, a Sunday School teacher, and the church treasurer. My father's first cousin. Ivy Sharp Derryberry, the first woman ordained as a minister in Maury County, also taught Sunday School and occasionally preached here. My mother, Mildred Belle Tindell Sharp, was an occasional pianist here, and I attended this church for over 42 years, and I was a Sunday School Superintendent here.

Perhaps the saddest day came when my father made the decision that the church could not continue as a viable institution and would have to close its doors, a phenomenon that had reached out and touched a lot of rural Cumberland Presbyterian Churches over the previous 10 years and would continue to reach out and touch the remaining rural CP churches for years to come.

Although it was approximately two years before the doors would reopen as the Bethlehem Baptist Church (thank the Lord they kept Bethlehem in the church name), my family did visit the church building on occasion as a way of keeping the spirit of worship alive until it could, hopefully, be revived as a house of the lord. I remember my daddy giving me the keys and telling me to stop in on occasion on the way to or from work and make sure the building 'felt' it had not been forgotten.
As a result of the Bethlehem Baptist Church being opened means in 2015 these grounds will have been a place of worship for the past two hundred years.
