SSgt. Kastner was a 20 year veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He was both a World War II and a Korean War vet. He was awarded the Marine Corps Good Conduct medal with 6 reelistments bars, the WWII Victory medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal with 2 silver stars (equally 10 campaigns), American Defense medal with one bronze star, American Theater Campaign medal, Korean Service medal with one bronze star, United Nations Service medal, National Defense medal, and both the Presidential Unit Citation and the Navy Unit Citation. SSgt. Kastner was also assigned to the marine detachment aboard the USS Yorktown during the battle of Midway.
