Emmer was born June 12, 1860. Her headstone is incorrect. She is listed on the 1860 Census, York County, South Carolina with her parents William James McSwain and Martha McGinnis McSwain and siblings. She is 3 months old when the census was taken September 10, 1860. Her father was working on a farm as a hired laborer and the family that lived next door the head of household was a widow and her last name was Black. Maybe that is where her middle name came from and Mrs. Black probably helped deliver her. York County extended to Spartanburg County at this time until the year 1900. Emmer never married. On the census her name is listed as Emma B. and headstone Emmer. ON the 1870 Census, Camp Call Township, Cleveland County, NC- She is 10 years old-- Also, Listed on the 1880 Census same place with her family as being 18 years old. So the birth date on the headstone is not correct, off by about 3 years. Also, on the back of the only picture a cousin has of her states her name as Emmer Black McSwain.
