JOHN DOUGLAS WALKER

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, in the Eagle's Lodge, at SE 50th and Hawthorne Avenue, for John Douglas Walker, who died Dec. 19, 2008, from congestive heart failure at age 89.

Born April 13, 1919, in Centralia, Wash., John was raised in Vancouver and Portland. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, "CCC" in 1937, and worked for two years as a driver between Camp Nehalem and Portland. He joined the Navy in January of 1940. He married GEORGIA JOHNSON in 1941. After attending Medical Corps School he served with the Marines in the Pacific during World War II. Following the end of WWII, he served on the USS LST 822, the USS Eversole DD789, and the USS Bremerton CA130 as a chief pharmacists mate. He was discharge in July 1959 in Long Beach, Calif. He and Georgia moved back to Portland in 1969 and she died in 1987. He then had an 18-year relationship with Betty Weyand; she predeceased him in 2006.

Survivors include his daughter, Johnna Nelson; sisters, Betty Carpenter and Dolly Carpenter; brother, Richard Walker; grandchildren, Gypsy Walker and Jonathon Nelson; many nieces and nephews, plus members of the Weyand family. He was prceded in death by his son, Greg Walker.

Private interment will be held at Willamette National Cemetery.
