Thank you to Dennis Brandt (#47232334) for contributing the following information about Charles Rhoads:

His actual surname was "Rhoads," or some variant of a name that has many spellings. He married Catherine P. "Kate" Hetzel November 26, 1857, in Dauphin, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Dauphin County November 15, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg on November 15 as 2nd lieutenant of Co. K, 173rd Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"). Sick throughout most of his term of service, he was assigned command of the prison in Norfolk, Virginia. On June 17, 1863, he resigned to organize a new company but was too ill to continue.

After the war, he moved west where he was employed as a civilian clerk at various military posts, including forts Hayes and Dodge in Kansas and Fort Sill in Comanche County, Oklahoma Territory, the latter with the quartermaster department. In 1882, the widowed Kate lived in York Borough, York County, and married Rev. Benjamin Hengst in 1907.
