Miss Callie Byrd Takes Own Life Here Tuesday

Miss Callie Byrd, committed suicide here early Tuesday afternoon. Miss Byrd was a member of a promient(sic) local family and had served in the city schools for forty-seven years.

She purchased six strynchnine(sic) tablets from a local drug store and visited friends at the local fire hall. After leaving the fire hall she went across to the fountain. Her peculiar actions attracted the attention of several people in the neighborhood. She was seen to take something from her pocketbook and swallow it then falling to the ground.

She was rushed to a local hospital and every effort made to save her life without avail. The box of strychinine(sic) was entirely empty when examined.

Miss Byrd is survived by a brother, the only close relative, Samuel Byrd, head of the English department of the Louisianna(sic) University.

A peculiar conincidence(sic) of the tragedy is that it occured on Miss Byrd's birthday. Friends attribute the action to general despondency.
