American-British pharmacist, entrepreneur, philanthropist and collector. He co-founded the pharmaceutical company Burroughs Wellcome & Company, which is one of four companies that became GlaxoSmithKline. He was a great collector of anything related to medicine, including Napoleon's toothbrush, which is on display at the Wellcome Collection. He was knighted in 1932 for his contribution to medical science and elected an Honorary fellow of the Royal College of surgeons. After his death the Wellcome Trust was established, and in 1971 the Wellcome Museum located in the Taliesin Arts Centre. He was creamated at Golders Green Crematorium. His ashes were mislaid between the period of his death and burial in 1987. Whilst excavating the collections in store during the 80's the casket containing the ashes was rediscovered and his ashes were intered in the churchyard of Saint Paul's Cathedral. Unfortunately there is no further information about how this came about. The casket that held Sir Henry's ashes is on display in the permanent collection galleries at Wellcome Collection Euston Rd.
