He received his draft notice on 30 November 1942 and despite the injury was able to pass the physical. He married Martha Jane Meuser on 16 July 1943 before shipping out to Europe.
He was a non-commissioned officer who served in Company H, 394th Infantry Regiment, 99th Infantry Division. He was devoted to his men and protected them as much as possible. His shoulder was reinjured by enemy bonbs but he returned to the lines to be with his men as soon as he was able. He was killed in action on 16 December 1944 during the first hours of the Battle of the Bulge. His remains were left behind as the enemy advanced and after the war the Army deemed him unrecoverable.
His remains were recovered on 1 June 2001 by two Belgiums who were part of the MIA Project. He is listed on the wall of the missing at Ardennes American Cemetery but there is now a bronze rosette next to his name signafying he is no longer amoung the missing.
On 22 June 2002 he was finally put to rest at Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery at the request of his family. He spent 57 years as missing but not forgotten.
