PVT US ARMY WORLD WAR I

William (Sandy) Alexander Johnson was born 29 Dec 1896 in Lawrence County, South Dakota. He was the son of Fredrick John Niemonen/Johnson and Katherine Marie (Hurula) Johnson, who had both immigrated to the USA from their native Finland. Sandy was the fifth of seven children born to this couple. He grew up primarily in the Horse Creek area of Butte County near Newell, SD.

As a young man, William enlisted in the US ARMY on 15 Jul 1917 and served as a PVT during World War I. William was married to Edith Hogarth on 27 Jul 1933 in Sturgis, SD. They were later divorced. While he did not have any children of his own, Sandy enjoyed his role as uncle. He worked approximately twenty years for the Homestake Mining Company in Lead, and later moved to Butte, Montana.

William A. Johnson died at the home of his sister Mrs. Ellen Schmele in Lead, SD, on 28 Dec 1956, one day before his 60th birthday.
