Clarence Leeling, at the age of 93, passed away Monday, Jan. 19, 2009 at Rapid City Hospice House.
Clarence was born March 7, 1915 at Node, (near Lusk) Wyo., to Clarence Edward Leeling and Arta C. (Anderson) Leeling. His family moved to the Whitewood area when he was around 4 years of age. He grew up there and like his father, worked on the Frawley Ranch. He served in the U.S. Calvary from 1941-1945. He was stationed in Burma during World War II. He married Stella (Leni) Caserio Torino of Lead, in Colorado Springs, Colo., on July 14, 1943 just prior to being shipped overseas.
Upon returning from the service, Clarence worked for several mining companies around the Lead/Deadwood area as an assayer before being hired full time for the Homestake Mining Company in Lead. He worked there until his retirement in 1980. Clarence and Stella celebrated 65 years of marriage this past year and raised four children while living in Lead.
Clarence is survived by his wife, Stella (Leni) Leeling of Lead, a son Gerald (Jane) Leeling of Burke, Va., his daughters Patricia (Frank) Carr of Thornton, Colo., and Jeanette (Robert) Fraser of Brandon, 11 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Mildred Willson of Whitewood, his brother-in-law Clifford (Maxine) Caserio of Lead, brother-in-law John Marinoni, Price, Utah, and brother-in-law John LaVoy of Spearfish, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Clarence was preceded in death by his parents Clarence and Arta Leeling, three sisters, his twin Clarice Lee, Alice Wanhanen, and Lois LaVoy; two brothers, Harold Leeling and Kenneth Leeling; and a stepson and daughter-in-law, Peter and Sandra Torino.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 7 p.m., on Sunday, Jan. 25 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lead followed by a rosary service at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., on Monday, Jan. 26, 2009 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lead with Rev. William Zandri as celebrant. Burial will with military honors at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. A memorial has been established to the Hospice House in Rapid City.
The Aldinger Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Spearfish has been entrusted with the services.
