Leonard Perilloux was the first born child of Jacque Perieux and Anne Barbay, both natives of France. Their marriage on 8 May 1753 is recorded in the records of St Charles Church of the Germans. Jacque was a native of Soual, Department of Tarn, France, and served as a French soldier in Louisiana. He died 24 Sep 1771 and his widow remarried in 1773 to Francois Clement, also native of France.

The family surname has been spelled a multitude of ways over the years. The earliest spelling of the surname that I have located is the 1753 marriage record where the name is Perieux. Over the years the the primary spelling became Perilloux in the river parish area of Louisiana. However, as family members moved around the state and country, many other spelling variations have occurred including Perrilloux, Perillioux, Perriloux, Periou, Perioux, Perrio, Perio, Priou, Prioux, and others.

The Spanish Census of June 1766 includes the following details of the Perilleau family: 1 man; 1 women; 2 boys under 15; 3 girls under 14; 1 indentured; 3 horses; 1 ox; 8 cows; 11 young bulls and calves; 16 sheep; 4 pigs; 1 musket; and 4 arpents of land occupied.

Leonard is listed in a 1770 roll of men eligible to serve in the Second Company of Militia of the German Coast organized by the Spanish Colonial government. He is a Fusillier listed as Leonard Perigueux, age 15 born on the "Coast", single, and residing in house number 53 on the left shore of the German Coast.
