James was a stonemason and ran his business next door to his home. He and his business partner, Courtney Trissler, started the company of O'Connell & Trissler in 1889. The company later became known as the Bedford Marble and Granite Company. From 1889 until James' death in 1939, he made exquisite stones and monuments, and, among other works, he was commissioned to make several monuments at the Chickamauga battlefield. He was a patent holder for a method of setting tombstones or other heavy objects.
James was my great-great-grandfather.
