He was born on March 1, 1919. He grew up in the Lemmon and White Butte areas. He farmed there and also was a trucker.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Ruth Portney; nine children; 14 grandchildren; two brothers, John Portney of DeReyter, N.Y., and Roger Portney of Richmond, Calif.; and two sisters, Inez Burdick of Meridian, Idaho, and Margaret Hoffman of Custer, S.D.
