Chief Gunner's Mate Jay was a career sailor with the United States Navy. He retired after 30 years of service. He was both a World War II and a Korean War vet. He saw service aboard the USS Bidge, USS Pittsburgh, USS Rigel (AD-13), USS S-32 (SS-137), USS Chaumont, USS Holland (AS-3), USS Bonita (SS-165), USS Saratoga (CV-3) USS Siboney (CVE-112) and the USS Tutuila. He was awarded the Navy Good Conduct medal with 3 reenlistment bars, American Defense Service medal, American Theater Campaign medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal, WWII Victory Medal, Korean Service medal, and the Navy Expert Pistol medal.
