ILLINOIS
Edmond was born the son of Enoch Stewart Richards and Elizabeth Ann Moore in North Otter Township of Macoupin Co IL. The Richards farmland [settled in 1830] lay about three miles to the east of Modesto IL.

CHILDHOOD
Ed was not privileged to have his father raise him to maturity, as Enoch [a Civil War Veteran] passed away when Edmond was only 8 years old. In the census of 1880 Elizabeth and the children are in the North Otter township of Macoupin County where aunts, uncles, and cousins resided. She would later marry John Wolford in McLean County Illinois.

MARRIAGE
I know nothing further of his life until 1892 when Edmond married Lillie Mae Borum [1874] in Shelbina MO. How he and Lillie got together and both came to be in MO is not known. [Lillie Mae was born in DeWitt County IL, near Waynesville; nearly 100 miles north-east from Modesto] Ed worked farm labor, odd jobs, and later owned a feed barn [stabling, feeding, caring for horses] in Shelbina. My Dad, Freddie Lee Richards, told me Ed was a "horse trader", so he must have bought and sold them also.

A REMEMBRANCE
One story my father [Freddie Lee Richards] told me was the day he, his father Charley, and his grandfather Edmond were near the Salt River--perhaps fishing. Dad said he could not swim at that time, and his grandpa taught him by throwing him into the water! I'm glad you learned quickly, Dad!

CHILDREN
