Politician and author. Served in the Michigan House of Representatives 1901 to 1904. Democratic candidate for governor of Michigan in 1908 and 1910. In 1908, he came within 10,000 votes of winning the governor's race. Served as chairman of the Michigan Railroad Commission from 1911 to 1916.

He wrote the book "History of Michigan" which was used in the schools of Michigan for many years. Also wrote a book on the life of Stevens T. Mason, the first governor of Michigan.

After his death, a book was written as a tribute to him titled "Lawton Thomas Hemans, A Memorial". It is over 200 pages containing a biography (much of which was used in this findagrave bio), tributes from friends and colleagues and select poems written by him.
