William was part of a family business of house and sign painting. Eventually he struck out on his own with partner Archibald Gilmore. Around 1910, he and his family and parents moved back to Mass and settled in Worcester where he continued with his painting business.
It is not known why the family left Jacksonville, but it is noted that Archibald Gilmore died in 1910 and perhaps this triggered the need to move.
