An inhalator was used without success at 11:24 p.m. by patrolman Harold Utke and Earl Thompson of the Rock Island police force.
Mr Melow was born in Rock Island on June 21, 1882, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Melow. He was reared and educated in this city. He married the former Bertha Eck in Rock Island on March 7, 1901. He was a member of the Church of Peace.
Member of the Rock Island Fire Department from 27 Mar 1918 - 10 Jun 1939, he was promoted to lieutenant June 1, 1936, retiring on pension June 10, 1939. A son, John F. Melow, private on the Rock Island Fire Department, now is at station No. 5, the same station from which his father was retired.
Mr. Melow was present at the following large Rock Island fires: Universal Tractor fire, Aug. 21, 1919; Hartz and Bahnsen wholesale drug firm, June 24, 1929; J.J. Newberry store fire, Jan. 16, 1933; Longfellow school, Feb. 12, 1934, and the Harms Hotel, WHBF fire, March 9, 1938.
Surviving are the widow; two sons, John and Edward, both of Rock Island; three brothers, John of Denver, Christy of Rock Island and Albert of Clinton, Iowa, and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon in the Hodgson Chapel. The Rev. Fred J. Rolf, pastor of the Church of Peace, will officiate, and burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 o'clock tonight.
