After spending several months detailed to the staffs of various generals, John was promoted Captain and Aide-de-Camp of U.S. Volunteers on 13 June 1862. Finally, he was commissioned Lt. Colonel, 193rd Ohio Infantry on 13 March 1865, from which rank he was mustered out at Winchester, Virginia on 4 August 1865.
After the War, John practiced law in Missouri and Kansas. He married Emma Stevens in Jackson, Missouri on 25 November 1874. After her death, he married Elizabeth "Bettie" Jacobs in Lafayette County, Missouri on 26 November 1876.
He was Companion #10097 of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion (MOLLUS), founded by and for commissioned officers of the Union army and navy. HIs membership medal appears here.
