Grace E. Poppiti

Mrs. Grace E. Poppiti, age 96 of Wilmington, DE, passed away on Friday morning, January 23, 2009.

Grace was born in Italy on July 27, 1912, daughter of the late James and Lucia (Cocco) Crescenzo. She had worked as a cook and waitress at various restaurants. Grace was a faithful and active member of St. Anthony of Padua Church, having belonged to its Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality and also joyfully serving as a longtime yard-mother for the parish elementary school. She also enjoyed time spent at the Oak Grove Senior Center. A fabulous baker and cook, she was a consummate and loving homemaker. Grace was endlessly devoted to her family, possessing the greatest adoration for her loved ones.

Mrs. Poppiti was predeceased by her husband, Carmine Poppiti; daughter, Philomena Capodanno; and brothers, Paul and Galileo Crescenzo. She is survived by her son, James "Sonny" Poppiti and his wife, Nancy; daughter, Eileen Fugolino and her husband, Nick; sister, Mary Palmiter of Michigan; son-in-law, Anthony Capodanno; 8 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the nurses and staff of ManorCare and Heartland Hospice for the compassionate and attentive care of Grace.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 9th & DuPont Sts. Wilm., DE 19805, on Tuesday, January 27, at 11 am. Entombment will follow in Cathedral Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the church Tuesday, 9:30-10:45am.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Delaware Chapter, 2306 Kirkwood Hwy, Wilm., DE 19805 or St. Anthony of Pauda Church at the address listed above.
