On September 11, 1862, Henry enlisted in the Heavy Artillery Company F Regiment 2. Henry saw active duty while in the military. Some time in 1865, while serving on an advance outpost, Henry contracted anchylosis which was caused by great exposure after recovering from the measles followed by chill fever. This ailment caused him great pain and he had a hard time walking or traveling as a result.
On March 18, 1865, Henry was mustered out and returned home. There, he was cared for by his sister Phebe Humiston and her husband Samuel Humiston until his death in 1873. A will drafted shortly before his death named Samuel Humiston as executor of his estate.
Henry is buried in the same cemetery as his sister and the Humsitons.
