Charlet M. Smith

Charlet M. Smith, 82, of Peru died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, at Millers Merry Manor in Peru.

Born May 29, 1926, in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of Charles S. and Merle (Wilson) Norton. She married Joseph Smith on Aug. 11, 1946, at Richvalley United Brethren in Richvalley, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 1, 1992.

Survivors include her sons, Edward A. (wife, Nancy) Smith of Flowery Branch, Ga., and Russell O. (wife, Louise "Weedie") Smith of Shelbyville; daughter, Jennifer J. (husband, Donald) McKinley of Peru; grandchildren, Janel (husband, Jeff) Little, Duke McKinley (fiancee, Heather Tharp), Allison Smith and Hillary Smith; and great-grandchildren, Marlena Steinhall, Kayla Steinhall, Madisyn Little and Wesley Little.

Mrs. Smith had been a librarian for the Peru Public Library for 23 years, retiring in June of 1997. She wrote articles for the Miami County Shopper titled "Here Abouts" and in the 1960s taught at St. John's Lutheran School.

She graduated from Chippewa High School and attended Indiana Central University.

Mrs. Smith was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years, Daughters of the American Revolution, Genealogy Society, Miami County Tourism Committee and Miami County Historical Society. She gave walking and driving tours of Miami County before there was a tourism bureau.

She was a talented and creative individual who loved the Lord, her family and music.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, 84 W. Main St. in Peru.

A celebration of life service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church, 181 W. Main St. in Peru, with Pastor Kenneth Greenwald officiating.

Burial will be in Ever Rest Memorial Park in Logansport.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, Peru Public Library or the Alzheimer's Association, in care of Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, 84 W. Main St., Peru, IN 46970.
