Charlie Crawford Simpson, 91, of Charlotte, and formerly of Belmont, died Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at his residence in Wilora Lake Lodge following an extended illness.

Charlie was born April 11, 1917 in Lancaster County, SC, the son of David Leonard and Cora Sims Simpson.

He had nine brothers and sisters, all of whom preceded him in death, including sisters Myra Pack, Queen Haire, Pauline Hamilton, Hazeline Cordell, and brothers Robert, Bill, James, Ted, and Pete Simpson.

Charlie's wife of 60 years, Matilda Jenkins Simpson, and two grandsons, Chad and Brian Simpson also preceded him in death.

He is survived by his children, Douglas Simpson and wife Terry of Monroe, David Simpson and wife Debbie of Charlotte, Linda Metz and husband Bob of Raleigh, Jeanie Carothers and husband Sam of Toronto, Canada; eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

During his youth, Charlie joined members of his family working at the Stowe Mills in Belmont, NC. Charlie joined the US Army in 1936 and served two years with the 8th Infantry Regiment in Panama, where he played on his unit's baseball team. During World War II, Charlie also served in the US Navy as an expert machine gunner on the heavy cruiser USS Albany. Following his military service, Charlie managed the Gastonia District for the Life Insurance Company of Virginia. He retired in 1979.

Charlie will be sorely missed by his family and friends. Tough yet sentimental, blunt yet charming, Charlie had a quick mind and wore lots of hats during his lifetime. In addition to his family ties, he was a salesman, soldier, ballplayer and hunter. He square-danced and traveled with his wife, raised and fielded hunting beagles, worked a large vegetable garden most every planting season and volunteered as a Mason and a lifelong member of Park Street Methodist Church.

In his later years, Charlie quietly spent time with family and his friends and neighbors at Wilora Lake, where he remained an avid reader and Atlanta Braves fan.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Saturday, January 31 at Park Street Methodist Church in Belmont, with the Rev. Harold E. Schwantes officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery immediately after the church service.

Pallbearers will be Ben Simpson, Vic Simpson, Mike Simpson, Aaron Carothers, Gavin Carothers, Brett Dymond and Steven Hamilton.

In lieu of flowers, donations honoring Charlie Simpson are appreciated at Park Street United Methodist Church, 120 Park Street, Belmont, NC 28012, or the Belmont Masonic Lodge #627 , PO Box 401, Belmont, NC 28012 where Mr. Simpson was a member.
