Joe's parents were both born in Czechoslovakia. He owned and operated a men's clothing store in Paris, Texas. On the 1930 Census, he was listed as a manager of a haberdashery in Paris, Texas with his wife Bonnie and sons Joe and Raymond. He later married Elizabeth Latimer, daughter of William "Will" Dan Latimer Sr and Ettie Penina Connor. They had no children.
