Sidney B. Witherington was a medical doctor. He graduated from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1885, the University of Nashville Medical Department in 1886, and the New York University School of Medicine in 1888. He was an allopath. In 1890 he had returned to his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee and married Clementine "Clemmie" Blaydes in Tipton County, Tennessee in 1890. They had one child, a son, Sidney Blaydes Witherington, in 1892. Sidney, Sr. died at the young age of only 39 years.
