Silas was the son of James Gibson and Ruth (Pritchett) Dobbs. On October 30, 1851 he married Parilee Lewis, daughter of Burwill and Lucinda Page Lewis. Silas served as Tax Assessor of Dekalb County from 1861-1863 and fought in the Civil War until the War ended. Together Silas and Parilee had eight children:

Silas died September 26, 1886 and is buried beside his bride at Lebanon Cemetery.
