Benjamin Alwin 'Alfard' Hohman (March 18, 1922 – November 03, 2010) served as Hays County Sheriff from January 1, 1981 to January 1, 1989. Sheriff Hohman was born in Mount Gainor, Texas (a small community south of Dripping Springs, Texas). Sheriff Hohman spent most of his younger years working as a cowboy and rancher in the Dripping Springs area. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the late 1930s and early 1940s, rising to a leadership position. In 1939 he joined the CCC and was stationed in Albany, where his company worked on restoring Fort Griffin. After leaving the CCC he returned to the Dripping Springs area and continued his life long career of ranching. He also worked as a home builder, surveyor lineman and test driver for Firestone tires, and at one time owned and operated a grocery store in Dripping Springs. Sheriff Hohman was eventually approached by Sheriff Jack Gary in 1963 and asked to become the replacement for the deputy who worked in the Dripping Springs area. Sheriff Hohman initially refused, but Sheriff Gary was persistent (by talking to Sheriff Hohman's wife first), and Sheriff Hohman joined the Hays County Sheriff's Office. He went on to eventually serve as the chief deputy. Sheriff Hohman was elected in 1980. Sheriff Hohman retired in 1989, and served over 28 years in law enforcement. Sheriff Hohman has stated that he never had the education or training to do the job, but he was good with people. He said, "I never took many people to jail, I always thought the job was about helping people. The job is still about helping people." Throughout his life, Sheriff Hohman was involved with his church and numerous civic activities in the Drippings Springs area.

Sheriff Hohman passed away on November 03, 2010, and was interred in the Phillips Cemetery in Dripping Springs, Hays County, Texas.
