Floyd R. "Duke" Sutherland, 80, Independence, MO passed away Friday, January 30, 2009 at Carmel Heights Living Center.

Duke was born August 17, 1928 in Kingsville, MO the son of Floyd H. and Mary Katherine (Michael) Sutherland. He was a 1949 graduate of William Chrisman High School and a 1953 graduate of Graceland College with a degree in Biology and Music. He was employed with Independence Regional Hospital in the billing department and later retired from the mailing department at Sears. Duke was a member of Eden Heights RLDS Church where he was a teacher in the Priesthood and a member of the Young Men's Department. Duke enjoyed doing small engine repair and he had a passion for music. He was known to play the harmonica and trumpet.

Duke is survived by his sisters; Georgia Latimer of Independence; and Linda Flater and her husband Larry of Independence. 16 nieces and nephews and 17 great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Dean (Jeffers) Sutherland in 2001; sister Maxine Dixon; brother Jack Sutherland and his parents. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial at Mound Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 pm Wednesday at the funeral home.
