Mrs. Leggett, Pioneer of Oroville, is Dead

Infirmities of old age bring death to well known resident, resided here 53 years
Crossed the Isthmus of Panama coming to California in 1862

OBITUARY - THE CHICO ENTERPRISE, Chico, CA, Tuesday Evening, August 31, 1915
Mrs. Abigail Burt Leggett, wife of the late Charles H. Leggett and for fifty three years a resident of Oroville, passed away at about noon yesterday as the result of a long illness due to the infirmities of age. Mrs. Leggett was 87 years, six months and seventeen days old, having been born at Belvale, New York on February 13, 1828.

Mrs. Leggett was one of the youngest of a family of thirteen children. She was married at the age of twenty-five years to Charles Leggett on the 18th day of June 1853. She lived with her husband in Iowa until March of 1862 when they came to California by way of the Isthmus of Panama.

Upon arriving in California they settled first in the San Joaquin Valley, but in August of the same year they moved to Oroville where Mrs. Leggett's brother Burt, owned the property which is now known as the Leggett ranch, and which adjoins Oroville on the south. Mr. Leggett followed the occupation of a rancher until his death in 1898.

Mrs. LEggett was an ardent church worker and at the time of her death was the oldest member of the Congregational church in this city. She joined this church at about the time it was organized in Oroville and was one of its charter members.

In October of 1902, Mrs. Leggett slipped on a rug while leaving the Congregational church and fell, injuring herself so that she was an invalid from that time until her death. Since that time she was unable to take such an active part in church work, but she continued to attend, being taken to and from the services in her chair.

She was the mother of eight children, three of whom are living. They are James H. Leggett, Mrs. John Keifer and Miss Cordelia Leggett, all of this city. Eight grandchildren: Kenneth, Howard and Elton Leggett, Mrs. Allen Swords, Mrs. William MacPherson, Donald MacFarlane, and Hartford Keifer also mourn her departure. She also leaves five great grandchildren. Mrs. Louis P. Burt of Palermo is a sister-in-law of the deceased.

Funeral arrangements have not been completed as yet, except that they will be held Wednesday. Dr. Pond, of San Francisco, requested that he be allowed to preach of the funeral ceremony and will do so.

OROVILLE (Butte Co.) August 31. Mrs. C. H. Leggett, aged 87 years, and one of Oroville's foremost pioneer women, died at her home in this city from the infirmities of old age. Mrs. Leggett had been lingering nearly all Summer long and it was known that the end was near. Thirteen years ago she injured her hip, since when she has been unable to walk.
Mrs. Leggett was born in Orange County, New York, February 13, 1828, and with her husband and two daughters came to California in 1862. It was just after the great Sacramento Valley flood when they arrived in California. They immediately settled on a large ranch at the edge of Oroville, where they lived up to the time of Mr. Leggett's death in 1899.
Devout Christian Woman.
The deceased was a devout Christian woman, and was the oldest member of the Congregational Church of this city. She is survived by two daughters, Miss C. B. Leggett, and Mrs. J. M. Keifer and one son, James H. Leggett, all of Oroville.
The funeral will be held to-morrow, Wednesday, morning at 10 o'clock from the family residence. Interment will be in Oroville Cemetery.

From H. H. Keifer: Abigail was three years older than Charles. I knew her as Grandma when I was a boy in Oroville. She remembered the astonishing meteor fall in 1832. When I was a boy, she had become unable to walk due to a fall that had broken one of her hip bones. Cordelia took care of her at 1209 Robinson St.
