George W. Robertson enlisted in the 22nd Michigan infantry in 1862 and was taken prisoner at Chickamauga just after being made captain. He was a registrar of deeds for Macomb County and assistant to adjutant general, Colonel Farrar. Mr. Robertson was a Mason for 50 years, and Lodge Master from 1873-1878. He was also a member of the Old Crowd.
Political significance: Democrat.
"As one of the first members of the Board of Public Works he aided much in getting improvements under way, and in one term as mayor did excellent service" (per obituary).

From Mt. Clemens, Michigan, George entered service at the organization of the 22nd on July 21, 1862 as a 1st Lieutenant and was commissioned on July 31, 1862. He was taken prisoner at Chickamauga, Georgia on September 20, 1863. He was confined in Atlanta, Macon, Savannah, Libby, Danville, Charleston, Columbia, Charlotte, Salisbury, Raleigh, Goldsboro and Wilmington prisons before he was exchanged on April 26, 1865. While imprisoned he was promoted to Captain to the date of November 17, 1863. He was mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee on June 26, 1865 and returned to Mt. Clemens which was his post war residence.
The Robertson plot in Clinton Grove Cemetery is in the middle of section A of Clinton Grove Cemetery, adjacent to the Tennant plot on the north. Section A is in the center of the front of the cemetery facing Cass Avenue. On entering the cemetery turn left and park half way between the cemetery building and the white building, and then proceed north about half way into section A to find the Robertson plot. The large Robertson stone faces east (the Robertson name is carved into the east side) and is fronted by the other gravestones, all of which face east.

Mt. Clemens - Colonel George W. Robertson, aged 78, former grand lecturer of the Masonic order of Michigan, is dead at his home here. He was born in Detroit, but in early life moved to this city with his parents. He was a major in the regular army and served during the Civil war.
