SOUTHAMPTON - George J. Bissonnette, 73, of Bissonnette Circle, a decorated Navy Veteran, died Wednesday at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton.
He worked at the former American Tissue Mills, Standard Greeting Card Company, Marvellum Paper Mill, all in Holyoke and the former Sibley Oil Company in South Hadley as an oil truck driver and boiler technician. He also was a bus driver for the former Holyoke Street Railway Company and a contracted Mail Messenger driver for the Holyoke Post Office delivering the bags of mail from Holyoke Post Office to Tapley Street Mail Center in Springfield..
Born in Holyoke, he was a graduate of Sacred Heart Grammar School and a 1943 graduate of Sacred Heart High School. He was a communicant of Holy Cross Church in Holyoke and a member of it's Men's Club.
A Navy Veteran of WW II, he served in the Asiatic-Pacific Fleet and took part in the 1945 liberation of the Philippine Islands. He was awarded two Bronze Stars and five Campaign Ribbons with Battle Stars. He was a Signalman 2C on the LCI 616 Landing Craft and also on the LCI 713, both of which were bombed in WW II when he was on them.
He was a former member of the Southampton Fire Department, a past president and former treasurer of the Pequot Lake Civic League of Southampton and treasurer of the Rock Valley Boy's Club of West Holyoke.
He leaves his wife of 51 years, the former Anna J.M. Brown (McAlpine) Bissonnette, his two daughters, Annmarie J. (Bissonnette) Christian of Springfield and Barbara F.J. (Bissonnette) Walz-Baillargeon of Chicopee and his son, George J.E. Bissonnette, Jr. of Chicopee; a brother, Paul D. Bissonnette, Sr. of Westfield, 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, George Albert Emile and Meta Gertrude (Denton) Bissonnette and his brother, Robert Albert Bissonnette of Southampton.
The funeral will be Saturday (March 6) morning at the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home and Holy Cross Church, with burial in St Jerome Cemetery, all in Holyoke. Calling hours are late this afternoon, Friday (March 5) and early evening.
