After receiving his commercial avaiation license in his early twenties, George Cannon established his own flight instruction school at the site of what later became Almeda Naval Air Station.
Before American entry into the Second World War, he joined the navy as a lieutenant j.g. and trained American, British and Canadian aviators. He was stationed variously at Pensacola,Florida and Grosse Ile , Michigan before transferring to the base at Midway Island(after 1942 battle) as operations officer. There he served until the war's end.
He continued to serve in the navy until his retirement in the 1950's with the rank of commander. Born in Winters, he is the grandson of civil war veteran David Chamberlain who is also buried in Winters. He is an alumus of Winters High School.
