John Barnett was the son of Joseph Barnett and Elizabeth Graham Barnett. He married Mary McEwen on 29 Apr 1784. They had a daughter Eleanor on 25 May 1788 and a son Joseph on 22 Nov 1789, per the Old Hanover Church Register of Births.

Two Joseph Barnets, a Margaret Barnet and a M'Nitt Barnet are heads of families, in about the year 1788. A "John Barnett" was assessed taxes in the amount of 1 lb, 15 shillings and 3 pence for a 1797 fund to repair the Old Hanover Church cemetery wall. A wall still surrounds the cemetery to this day and has gone through many repairs since then. (Rev. Thomas H. Robinson's Early History of Old Hanover Church, Dauphin Co., PA, 1878, published by the Historical Society of Dauphin County, 1878, various pages) In 1785, this area in Lancaster Co., PA, became Dauphin Co.

Maj. John Barnett is listed on the 1993 SAR Veterans of the Revolutionary War plaque at the gate entrance (see photo). He served as a Lieutenant in Col. Timothy Green's Hanover Associators. He served 27 Aug 1776 in the Long Island campaign, plus in 1777.

"Major, LCM & Continental Army" was recorded in President Oscar H Stroh's (Harris Ferry Chapter Sons of the American Revolution) Revolutionary War Soldiers Buried in Dauphin County Pennsylvania, 1988 (per HZ).

"Commemorative Biographical Encyclopedia of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania: Containing Sketches of Prominent and Representative," 1896, page 186, says he died 12 May 1823. His gravestone says he died on the 5th instead of 12th. Page 57 lists many other Barnetts from the area.

An early Barnet to this area was Robert Barnet, in Lancaster Co. PA warrant #166, dated 9 Jun 1738 in Hanover Twp., surveyed 200 acres on C23, p 63 and patented on 7 Jun 1822 to Christian Hunsicker on #H20, p 231 for 267 acres.

John's will was recorded in Dauphin Co., PA Register of Wills, Film JBH-307, Vols 1D, 1812 - 1826, LDS Film #005534187. Page # not legible His will began on page before the 2 posted and it says: John Barnett's Will: In the name of God Amen the 25th february 1817 I JOHN BARNETT of West Hanover township Dauphin County and state of Pennsylvania having perfect health of ___?___ sound and disposing mind and memory thanks to God for the same Ca___?____ (dark aged corner is not legible).....
