When Julia Ann Cave was born on March 12, 1850, in Dubois County, Indiana, her father, Thomas Jefferson Cave Jr, was 19 and her mother, Rebecca Hoggatt Cave, was 18.

Sadly, her father and grandfather died when she was very young, and her mother remarried. For a time, Julia and her sister Rose lived with their grandmother, Frances Davis Cave (also know as Fanny). But her age soon precluded her caring for her granddaughters. The girls were then split up, and Julia went to live in Kentucky with her uncle, Albert Davis, and his family. This is where she was living at age in 1860. Her sister went to live with Zara Davis in Monroe County, IN, but she soon died, as did Zara Davis.

Julia returned to Indiana, and she was married to James M Daugherty on August 15, 1867, in Daviess County, Indiana. She had one son: Charles Courland Daugherty.

Julia lived alone into her nineties. A family story told about her was that she would often get dressed "to go to town." She would then sit on her front porch, and neighbors and friends driving by would stop and say, "Julie, you want to go to town?" "Yes," she would reply, and she was off to town, at the exasperation of her son, Charlie!

She also was a character, spoking a corn cob pipe and chasing her great-grandchildrent around her house while in her late seventies and early eighties.

Another story about her character was her patience. She would get out a sifter, cornmeal, and some paper. She would place her small grandchild on the floor on the paper to play with these items while the adults talked.

She died on February 29, 1936, in Daviess County, Indiana, at the age of 85, and was buried in Washington, Indiana.
