John Robert "Bozo" Kirkland was born on February 18, 1932 in Plaquemine, Louisiana. He was the fifth of seven children born to Widmer Carl Kirkland and Lillian Rose Carmouche Kirkland. He lived in Plaquemine all his life with the exception of two years in the military, for which he volunteered. He was stationed in England and served as an instructor in guided missile systems. Bozo died Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at his home in Plaquemine. He was 77. Visiting at Wilbert's Funeral Home, Plaquemine, on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Thursday, February 5, 2009 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Religious services will be conducted by Fr. Cleo Milano at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Plaquemine, La. Bozo is survived by his wife of 56 years Charles Barbara "Charlie" Biehler Kirkland; children Les Ann Kirkland; John Robert "Ja" and wife Leesa McMichiel Kirkland; Van Carl and wife Debra Glass Kirkland and Pam Kirkland Garvin; grandchildren Taylor Kirkland, Jonathan Garvin, twins Elise and Danielle Garvin, Hope Kirkland, Todd "Deuce" Garvin II and Carson Kirkland, siblings Verna May Kirkland O'Neil Roberts and husband Buddy, Lillian Kirkland Boudreaux O'Neil, Louis and wife Dixie Hoffman Kirkland, Charles and wife Shirley Miller Kirkland, Roosevelt and wife Elaine Hebert Kirkland and Richard and wife Jill Marionneaux Kirkland, sister-in-law Edna Beth Biehler Payne of Lake Oswego, OR, brother-in-law Jerry Wenzel of Houston, TX and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by parents Widmer Carl Kirkland and Lillian Rose Carmouche Kirkland, granddaughter Grace Ann Kirkland, sister-in-law Eliska Biehler Wenzel and brothers-in-law J.A. Biehler Jr., Gus O'Neil, Louis O'Neil and Kenneth Payne Sr. Bozo began his work career as a projectionist at Wilbert's and Osage Theatres in Plaquemine, La., he worked at Dow Chemical for 25 years and retired as a Water Treatment Supervisor. He was co-owner of "Kirkland's Kove", a popular vacation camp on Grand Isle, La., which he and Charlie ran for 28 years. Bozo was a jack-of-all-trades and master of many. He was an intelligent and innovative thinker with an analytical turn of mind and a thirst for knowledge who educated himself on diverse subjects and issues. He was skilled artistically and he liked music and dancing. In his youth he was an avid boater and was a charter member of the Plaquemine Boat Club. He greatly enjoyed racing, skiing and was a powerful swimmer. He was a skilled builder and an ace mechanic. He built several boats and designed and constructed three of his homes. He volunteered his skills to friends and family. He was one-of-a-kind and a man of many talents, he will be greatly missed. The family would like to thank his many friends, relatives and doctors who helped care for him and especially Comfort Care staff and associates.
