Dr. John Elward Brown, Sr. ,founder of John Brown University at Siloam Springs, Arkansas, died at his home here last night. He was 77 years old.

Dr. Brown also active in the management of a number of other schools and in several radio stations, maintained homes both here and in Siloam Springs.

His secretary, Miss Luella Smith, said the veteran educator broke a leg January 12 and was hospitalized about three weeks for its treatment. She added that his general health was considered good.

Dr. Brown a native of Oskaloosa, Iowa, founded the co-educational John Brown University in 1919.

Later he founded or purchased four California schools. They are the Brown Military Academy at nearby San Diego, CA the Brown School for Girls at Glendora, CA, the Southern California Military Academy at Long Beach, CA, and the Brown Day School at Beverly Hills, CA.

He was chairman of the board of the John Brown Foundation, owner of radio stations KONE, Tulsa, Oklahoma; KUOA and KUOA FM. Siloam Springs; and KGER, Long Beach, California.

Survivors include the widow Juanita, and a son John E. Jr., both of Siloam Springs; and four daughters, Mrs. Jean Smiley, Lakeside, California; Mrs. mary Jane Griffith, San Diego; and Mrs. Virginia Neal and Miss Juanita Frances Brown, both of Long Beach, California.

He is buried at the John Brown University Cemetery across the street from the University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, Benton County.
