John W. Martus and his wife Elvira were married on April 5, 1888 in Vermillion, Clay county, South Dakota. They decided to homestead out on the prairie. They were building a home for themselves and their 4 children when they were stricken with Typhus Fever. All the family had the illness but only John and Elvira eventually died of the illness. John died in June of 1894 and Elvira died Nov. 14, 1894 leaving the children orphans to be raised by their maternal grandmother Theresa A. Adams.

Edna was the middle daughter of John and Elvira. She along with the rest of the children lived with their maternal grandmother Theresa Adams until Theresa's death. The Children were then sent to an orphanage in Vermillion. The photos represent Edna as she graduated from school on top and of course her baby picture. The children are also shown with their grandmother. Edna is the girl to the far left.

My grandfather George Martus, Edna's little brother, told me in a letter that I have, that when Edna got out of school she took up nursing. She later married Aloysius Valarian Connolly 16 Feb 1927 in Union County South Dakota. She then moved with her husband to Nebraska sometime after 1930.

Edna developed Parkinson's disease and suffered with it for years before her death.

Their son David M. Connolly born 12 Jan 1931 moved to California as an adult and died in Cypress, Orange County in 1987.
