Elbert Sidney Lewis was commonly called Sidney or Sid. He was born at Oldtown (no longer exists), Grayson, Virginia. It is close to Galax and Independence, VA. He was the son of J. Hardin Lewis and Sarah (Sally) Ann Parker, of Surry County, North Carolina. Sid had an older sister, Victoria Alice Lewis. His mother died a few weeks after his birth and he was raised by his grandparents, Joseph and Mary Ann (Polly)Hickman Parker, in Mount Airy, NC. His sister was raised by grand-parents, Elkanah and Mahala Riggs Lewis near Dobson, NC. His father went to Knox County, Tenn. and later remarried Lucy Jones. They had two boys and a girl.

Sid went by train to north-eastern Kansas in the fall of 1882 and lived with his Uncle Sam & Mary Parker. It was there he met Mary Emily Ebert. They married 23 Dec 1886. They were childless for about 8 years, then had a boy and four girls. They lived in Brown County and later in Atchison County, Kansas. He was tall and slender and wore a mustache. As a farmer he worked very hard to support his family.
