He was born in Kenyon on Feb. 9, 1924, the son of George W. and Edna (Lee) Hanson. He graduated from Kenyon High School in 1942.
As a veteran, George was an integral part of shaping our world, having served in the Army Corp of Engineers in famous World War II campaigns like the Battle of the Bulge, as well as completing a stellar career with the United States Public Health Service.
He married Betty Wangsness on Sept. 14, 1952 at Hegre Lutheran Church in rural Kenyon. Together, he and Betty raised a wonderful family.
He is survived by three sons: Jim (Tammy) of Denver; Michael (Anita) of Boulder; Douglas (Penny) of Bismarck, N.D.; one daughter, Janet (Gordon) Hartman of Council Bluffs, Iowa; four grandchildren: Wesley and Kristine Hartman, Lauren Hanson and McKayla Hanson; two sisters: Eileen "Sid" Strandemo of Kenyon and Luanna (Gary) Cheney of Northfield; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Betty in 1991, his parents and one brother, Donald L. Hanson.
A private family interment service will be held in the spring at the Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver.
He is remembered as a kind and giving person who loved gardening and who, for more than 30 years, operated his own apiary, harvesting honey for the good of man. Sid, Don and Luanna were lucky to have him as a "big brother."
